Is SEO A Grind?

Here are some great tweaks and best practices to make your SEO efforts create a bigger & better impact.

Tweak Your OnPage..,

The SEO arena is always changing. Although many core principles remain the same we still have to adapt with technology and the latest search engines updates. If you can make it easy for search engines to find and read your content then you’ll be rewarded with extra rankings for your keywords. You may already know about title tags and using keywords, but what about site structure, interlinking, outbound linking, site maps and hub-pages on your site? Here at WDM we already have an On page SEO Checklist but let’s take that a little further.

Manish Dudharejia from shares 17 excellent tweaks to really get your SEO efforts working for you:

SEO is an involved and strategic process, but not every SEO change you make needs to be a difficult overhaul. Instituting small but important fixes and tweaks can have an important impact on your rankings.

Here are some fairly simple changes we recommend making over the course of the year.

1. Optimize Your Titles & Headings

Make sure that your target keywords are mentioned in your page title tags.

If you are already doing this, update any old page titles that were created before you started incorporating keywords into your titles.

If your H1 tags are different from your titles, make sure that they mention your target keywords as well, if perhaps a slightly different variation on them.

Include secondary keyword targets in your H2 and H3 subheadings.

2. Use a Mobile-Friendly Theme

This should be old news for most of you, but if your site isn’t mobile-friendly in 2019, this needs to change immediately.

If you are using a CMS, update to a mobile-friendly theme, otherwise, have your developer update your site so that it uses responsive design.

3. Repurpose Your Content By Creating Hub Pages

Create a hub page for every top-level keyword your site is targeting by repurposing the information you have collected in all of your shorter, more targeted blog posts.

Compile all of the information from your long-tail blog posts into a list of summaries that address the entire concept as a whole.

4. Implement a Keyword-Oriented Hierarchical Taxonomy

Update your new hub pages with links for deeper dives on pages that cover longer tail keywords.

Your hub page can act as a series of summaries of smaller, more targeted blog posts, uniting them together into a cohesive whole, and linking to the subpages for more in-depth information.

Each subpage can then act as a hub page that links to even deeper pages targeting even longer tail keywords. Each subpage should also link back to its hub page.

It’s best if this is done both through the navigation and through contextual links within the content itself. This can be accomplished simply by updating by updating your existing content and the navigation.

With on-page taken care of let’s look at what else you can to to be more efficient with SEO. You probably produce content for you website and various social media channels. It’s a necessary but time-consuming process so why not get more out of it. You NEED high quality and relevant links to your website so why not make your wonderful content produce some of those links for you. This isn’t just about linking back to you website from your post. Kristen Vaughn (also from sums this up nicely when she talks about aligning social media and link building efforts…

Leveraging Content & Social to Support Link Building

There are two essential parts of naturally generating authoritative backlinks to a website:

Producing high quality, link-worthy content.

Promoting that quality content strategically.

For this reason, aligning content and social media efforts with your link building initiatives is crucial. In this article, I’ll be providing a variety of tactics to do just that.

Creating Link-Worthy Content

Let’s start with the first part of generating authoritative backlinks to your site – producing high-quality content.

It’s important that content and link building efforts are aligned from the very start, before the content creation process even begins.

Not only will this ensure that you’re creating the write type of content, but it will also help you reach and engage key targets when possible, whether that includes specific influencers, industry publications or other third-party websites.

When it comes to creating valuable and link-worthy content, here are some of the tactics that I’ve found to be successful.

Influencer Insights

Create content around industry influencers or experts by sharing their unique insights.

This will offer valuable content to your readers, further position you as a thought leader in the space, and encourage these influencers/experts to share the asset with their highly targeted audiences.

This content could include:

  • Interview-style articles.
  • Roundups.
  • Lists of predictions or trends.
  • Quotes.

Get creative based on the type of content that you know your audiences is most receptive too.

The best place to start with identifying influencers? Your link building targets.

If you don’t already have a list established, use FollowerWonk to determine credible profiles that are related to the topic.

For example, if you are writing a piece about The Top Artificial Intelligence Predictions for 2019, you can use FollowerWonk to search Twitter bios that reference “artificial intelligence” or “AI”.

Then, sort by Social Authority and Followers to find the best opportunities.

Once the asset is published, be sure to reach out to the people/websites directly, and let them know that you’ve mentioned them in the article.

Depending on your relationship with them, you could even directly ask them to link to it.

If you’re serious about making SEO work for you then you need to keep on top of what’s happening in this space.
